Throughout the month, IGN Premiere is highlighting some of the biggest upcoming entertainment releases. Today we have the very first music video for The Green Knight, the epic new fantasy adventure inspired by Arthurian lore.
The film, which opens July 30 on A24, is directed by David Lowery, the visionary filmmaker behind Pete’s Dragon, A Ghost Story, The Old Man & the Gun and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. Dev Patel plays Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table whose saga was first told in the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (which was republished by JRR Tolkien in 1925).
Gauvain is portrayed in Lowery’s film as King Arthur’s reckless and stubborn nephew who seeks the legendary emerald-skinned giant green knight. Gwain’s quest sees him taking on various adversaries and challenges along the way, from ghosts and thieves to giants. As the official plot synopsis for the film says, Gwain’s quest for the Green Knight “becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and his kingdom by taking on the ultimate challenger.” .
In this exclusive IGN Premiere clip, which you can watch via the player above or the embed below, King Arthur (Sean Harris) and his Knights of the Round Table receive a visitor from Camelot … the green knight (played by Ralph of The Witch Inéson).
The scene also features Sarita Choudhury as Gauvain’s mother, who, though not named, represents Morgan la Fey, and who may or may not guide the story behind the scenes.
“It’s a deeply Christian poem, with moral overtones, but it’s also a Celtic poem about heroes of old who lived closer to nature and people whose deities were more likely to be identified with natural things, “Carnegie Mellon University’s Peggy Knapp said in the film’s production notes.
“The concept of chivalry in relation to a youngster who finds out what type of man he is going to be has been the root of this story for me,” according to David Lowery, who first read the poem in college. “The subject is present in the original text but it’s something that makes this story incredibly current. Gauvain is on an epic quest to realize the value of personal integrity.
In the film’s production notes, Patel says he sees Gwain as a privileged and luxurious young man who “never really had to get his hands dirty or earn his place in the world or in society. … He has offered himself a place at the Round Table among all these great legends and knights – but he has no legend of his own. For me, it was the story of a young man who went out into the world and found his purpose and traced his story in the history books for himself. “
In addition to Dev Patel, The Green Knight also stars Alicia Vikander in the dual role of Essel, the lover of Gauvain and the Lady, who tempts Gauvain on his journey; Joel Edgerton, who previously played Gauvain in King Arthur in 2004, as Lord; Erin Kellyman of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier as St. Winifred; and Barry Keoghan (Marvel’s Eternals, Dunkirk) as a character described as an intriguing highwayman.
The Green Knight only opens in theaters on July 30. Tickets go on sale Friday July 16.
