After Hobbiton, it looked like any New Zealand tour involving “The Lord of the Rings” had to be a success – and we can add them to the list.

The world will soon be returning to Middle-earth, and the first season of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV series has already been filmed in New Zealand. The budget for this series is tantalizing and even brings Game of Thrones out of the water. In New Zealand, there are already a number of Lord of the Rings tours across the country, taking Tolkien fans to all of their favorite places.

The Hobbiton film set is also in New Zealand and is easily accessible by car from the main city of Auckland (easy to visit without a tour). Lord of the Rings tours can range from half a day to massive 21-day quests. Here are just a few examples of the many LOTR tours on offer to Aotearoa (New Zealand’s native Maori name).

Amazon’s “Lord of the Rings”

The Amazon series is set to take place in the Second Age of Middle-earth before the events of the Lord of the Rings novel and films. It is expected to start streaming on Amazon Prime Video in 2022.

  • $ 250 million: The amount Amazon paid for rights to the Lord of the Rings
  • $ 1 billion: The minimum amount Amazon should spend on the series
  • Eight episodes: Number of episodes in the first season
  • Five seasons: The number of seasons expected
  • $ 560 million: (Very) approximate figure of what HBO paid for 8 seasons of Game Of Thrones

While it looks like Amazon will be producing the following seasons in the UK, the first season has already been shot in New Zealand where the original LOFRs were filmed.
