the The Lord of the Rings: reviews
The Lord of the Rings, the masterful trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The king’s return) based on the books by JRR Tolkien, arrives at Showmax in July. The prequel, The Hobbit trilogy, An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies are also on Showmax.
The Lord of the Rings takes place in “Middle-earth”, at a time before humanity ruled the world, when dwarves, elves, wizards and all manner of magical beings ruled.
Their rulers were given eight mighty rings with which to rule the Earth. But secretly, a ninth ring, more powerful than all the others, has been formed by a dark wizard. The ring lay dormant for years before being tripped by the creature Gollum, endangering the safety of all of Middle-earth.
The ring must now be destroyed, and a group of Hobbits – little human-like boobies – set out on this dangerous mission. They are led by Frodo Baggins, played by Elijah Wood, and his humble gardener, Samwise Gamgee, played by Sean Astin.
They are backed by a team of powerful mythical beings, but ultimately the power of the Ring can only be tamed by the most humble of creatures – the Hobbits – who can resist its alluring allure. In his heart, The Lord of the Rings talks about the friendship between Frodo and Samwise, and how the little ones among us can accomplish great things.
This gives them a perilous task, and the film’s groundbreaking CGI has helped create terrifying adversaries such as the dreaded orcs. It was shot in the beautiful plains of New Zealand and the trilogy has an incredible score (composer Howard Shore won multiple Oscars for music).
But the real magic of The Lord of the Rings is in the casting. Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Kate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean and Christopher Lee are just a few of the star actors. Under the direction of Peter Jackson, they brought to life a magical tale that is, at its core, very human.
The trilogy won 17 Oscars and is still considered one of the most influential film series ever produced. This is the ultimate epic fantasy frenzy! – Sarah evans
