The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra is the musical powerhouse behind the soundtrack of the new animated film ‘Wish Dragon’, the # 1 film this week on streaming giant Netflix in New Zealand and many other countries , including the United States.
The soundtrack for the family feature film was played and recorded in Wellington in late 2019, with Wish Dragon composer Philip Klein also leading the NZSO.
Philip is a highly regarded Hollywood composer and orchestrator. He previously worked with the NZSO on the films “Emperor” and “Mr. Pip”.
His recent credits include orchestrating the films “Joker” and “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”, and the Disney + Star Wars spin-off “The Mandalorian”.
Wish Dragon hit Chinese theaters in January, where it reached No. 4 at the box office. By airing elsewhere on Netflix, the Sony Pictures animated feature, co-produced by Jackie Chan, will have a potential global audience of over 200 million people.
NZSO General Manager Peter Biggs says the National Orchestra is known to excel with the best film composers and orchestrators to produce first-class film soundtracks. Being chosen for Wish Dragon will strengthen the reputation of the NZSO with filmmakers and composers.
“The NZSO has a proud history of performing on movie soundtracks heard by millions of people around the world, including The Fellowship of the Ring by Peter Jackson, two installments of The Hobbit and Mortal Engines,” he said. -he declares.
“We are very happy that with the release of Wish Dragon on Netflix, millions more people can potentially hear NZSO again, many for the first time. We could say that this is a wish that has come true for us!
Peter says that many orchestras around the world compete in a highly competitive industry to perform movie soundtracks. Wish Dragon was another vote of confidence from international filmmakers on NZSO’s expertise.
“Once the work on Wellington Town Hall and the new National Music Center in the capital is completed, the NZSO will be able to perform and record even more soundtracks. The opportunities are limitless. “
In interviews, Wish Dragon composer Philip Klein praised the NZSO for their contribution to the film.
“It’s a full-service film music orchestra and they’re amazing,” he says.
“It’s a real orchestra, and the advantage of working with an orchestra that plays together is that they can come together so quickly as an ensemble… I also think from a personality point of view, they are perfect as an orchestra for a movie like that because they are very laid back, they have a lot of fun, but they are amazing and impeccable players.
“We had some magical sessions. They played their hearts out. I would always go back [to New Zealand] in the blink of an eye, because I love these players and the whole. Plus, the organization is amazing. They go out of their way to make you feel at home.
