the New England Patriots normally free agency shopping, but that just wasn’t an option after suffering their worst season in two decades.
However, we are not sure that anyone will expect them to distributes nearly $ 300 million in the first week of the procedure.
When it comes to offense, GM Bill Belichick has made a clear focus on putting Cam Newton in the best position to succeed.
The team signed tight ends Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, as well as wide Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne to strengthen the receiving body.
Continuing to spend a lot indicates Newton will be the starter next season, but the Patriots have room to absorb Deshaun Watson’s contract if they push him late.
However, in light of the troubles allegations of sexual misconduct being done against Watson, it’s worth considering whether the Patriots should curb their supposed interest, if it’s not even on their radar at all.
The Patriots should likely reduce their reported interest in pursuing a trade for Deshaun Watson.
If you had asked us earlier this week, we obviously would have been in favor of the Patriots pushing hard in their pursuit of Watson. After all, the initial allegation seemed odd after it came from the Instagram account of leading lawyer Tony Buzbee. No one knew what to think when this premiere hit the public.
However, more women accused Watson of sexual misconduct Thursday, bringing the total number of accusers to seven, and Buzbee says more are on the way. Regardless of Watson’s reputation and philanthropic leanings, it would be a glaring look for the Patriots to make a concerted effort to make him their quarterback of the future right now.
In other words, the Pats must wait until these lawsuits are resolved (at the very least!) Before making a noticeable effort for Watson. Business may drag beyond 2021 draft which would really derail any chance they have to exchange for the triple Pro Bowler this offseason. But if so, so be it.
We know Belichick and the Patriots like to exploit advantageous situations, but pursuing Watson amid this wave of troubling allegations, more of which may come to light in the coming days, would be an incredibly reckless effort.
That’s not to say that Belichick is overly concerned with how he is viewed in the public eye, but this many allegations of sexual misconduct / assault are more than alarming, especially with the current prevalence of this topic in the world of sport.
We would love nothing more than to see Watson on the new Patriots roster, but they have no choice but to wait for his name to be cleared somehow before they can even consider doing a gesture for him without being eviscerated by the media.
