A Lord of the Rings animated film set before the main trilogy has been announced to be in the works at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.

The Warner Bros. Film Trilogy based on The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed film franchises of all time. It’s the first time the Lord of the Rings has never been adapted using animation since 1978, when a film by animation legend Ralph Bakshi was released in theaters by United Artists. This version of the Lord of the Rings has received a mixed critical reception and is not as popular as the live-action movies directed by Warner Bros. in the 21st century. It will also be the first film based on the Lord of the Rings released in theaters since 2014 The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
