Amazon’s Next The Lord of the Rings TV series completed the casting of the first season. The show’s list adds four new names, according to Hollywood journalist, with Charles Edwards (The Crown), Will Fletcher (The Girl Who Fell), Amelie Child-Villiers (The Machine) and Beau Cassidy joining the cast.
Specific details about their roles are, as expected, under wraps at this time. But would you remember it anyway? The cast for the first season is currently at 39 actors.
But it’s safe to say that they won’t necessarily play recognizable faces in the franchise. Although currently known as the “Lord of the Rings series”, the Amazon series will not adapt the same story told in the Peter Jackson film trilogy. Rather, it takes place elsewhere in the mythology of Middle-earth.
A prequel series delving into the stories of JRR Tolkien during the Second Age, it will adapt the annexes of the Silmarillion and the Companion of the Ring, telling new stories that take place in peacetime and follow familiar and new characters, with the Amazon’s official synopsis promising the show “will take viewers back to a time when great powers were forged, kingdoms became glorious and crumbled, unlikely heroes were tested, hope suspended by the finest of son and greatest villain that ever sank from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover everyone in darkness.
Not much else is known about the plot of the series. Actor Benjamin Walker recently said Collider the show’s mysterious and veiled secret will be worth it: “So I really can’t say much about it except that you’ll be happy to know so little when you see it.” When asked how long he would shoot the first season, he added: “It’s a bit nebulous at this point. We’ve been here a long time and they’ll let us go when they’re done with us.”
That’s probably why we don’t have a release date for the series either. Production began on the series in January 2020, with the first two episodes directed by JA Bayona and shot back to back. Initial plans were for the show to debut in December 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic and the departure of actor Tom Budge have led to his status now in limbo.
