The highly anticipated match between Jackson State and Florida A&M in the 2021 Orange Blossom Classic will have a very big platform.
The match between the two HBCU football titans and future SWAC rivals will be broadcast live on ESPN2. The game will take place on September 5 at 3 p.m. at the Hard Rock Cafe Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
The game marks the return of Florida A&M football after a nearly two-year layoff. FAMU chose not to compete in football for the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 campaigns. He finished 9-2 in the 2019 campaign, his last competitive season in MEAC football. FAMU will officially join SWAC on July 1, 2021.
Jackson State participated in football in the spring. All six contests have appeared on the ESPN family of networks. The first two, wins over Edward Waters and Grambling State, were broadcast on ESPNU. The next two games – a win over Mississippi Valley State and a loss to Alabama State – were both broadcast live on ESPN2. Each of JSU’s last games – the losses to Southern and Jackson State – have both aired on ESPN.
The Orange Blossom Classic will be one of two HBCU games to air on the network that day.
SIAC’s Fort Valley State and Tuskegee are scheduled to meet after this match in the first-ever Red Tails Classic. The game is owned and operated by ESPN as the MEAC-SWAC Challenge and the Celebration Bowl. The game will be played at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, AL.
“The history of this exceptional HBCU institution is accentuated by the important role the Tuskegee Airmen played during World War II,” said Peter Derzis, senior vice president of university athletic programming at ESPN earlier this year. , “and is a great source of pride that we hope to highlight as part of this nationally televised event.
The MEAC / SWAC Challenge will air live on ESPN on August 28 as part of its Week Zero coverage. Alcorn State will represent SWAC while North Carolina Central will represent MEAC.
