Amazon recently released the first trailer for its upcoming The Lord of the Rings TV series. The new show is slated for release in 2021 and will most likely be produced by Amazon Studios, New Line Cinema, and Tolkien Estate. They haven’t announced any of the cast yet, but we do know it will be based on Tolkien’s original work, so you can expect plenty of elves, orcs, and dwarves!
What is the Lord of the Rings release date?
While there is no official word yet on an expected release date, Amazon is due to begin production on the show within two years – filming began in November 2019. A recent update from Amazon exec. Jennifer Salke gave more details. “We would all love an addicting big show that is performed at the top of its game,” suggested Salke. “We’re really excited about The Lord of the Rings. Despite all the chatter about it, the deal just concluded a month ago.
Salke added: “It will be in production in two years; [but] 2021 is hope. Salke explained. “But there are other people who wish it was 2020.”
Fortunately, “The Lord of the Rings” was one of several projects that had received a border exemption from New Zealand. The show’s crew were aiming to resume filming in September, and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in December that production was underway in New Zealand.

Manu Bennett (Crixus of Spartacus) will play Azog, the orc commander of Sauron who killed Boromir in a battle with Gondor;
Luke Evans (Ser Gaston de Rais from Beauty and Beast) will play Bard, an old Ranger who fights alongside Aragorn against Mordor’s forces in Helm’s Deep;
Michael Gambon (Harry Potter’s Albus Dumbledore) will appear as Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts and a mighty wizard (if you’ve seen Harry Potter then you know who he is);
Frances de la Tour will play Madame Olympe Maxime, director of the Académie Beauxbâtons;
Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter’s Lord Voldemort) will play Lord Sauron.
