Dyson V15 Detect made me feel like a cleaning superhero from the future

Cleaning the house is a chore that some might find enjoyable, but most find it dreadful. I fall into this last category.

And my lack of interest in cleaning stems not only from the fact that it’s a daunting task, but also from the fact that the moment I inhale even a little dust, I end up sneezing several times – so obviously the experience isn’t as fun for me.

So when Dyson contacted me and asked if I wanted to try their latest and greatest vacuum cleaner – the V15 Detect – I was least interested. But that changed when I saw what it looked like.

Straight out of a sci-fi movie

From the pictures online, this is what the vacuum really looked like, something the Power Rangers would use to take down monsters or something Tony Stark would have made in his lab. A weird looking industrial design with pipes, a large handle and a trigger.

And that madness only got more intense when I could hold it in my hands – the large blaster-like cylinder collects dust with a connection port for attaching various accessories.. The set also had a decent weight, even though it’s all plastic.

The initial setup required me to charge the device to 100% which took a few hours, but after that I was more than excited to really test out what it was capable of.

What’s in the box

In the box, you’re greeted with a bunch of attachments to help you clean all sorts of things — you’ve got two attachments for cleaning carpets — one large and one small, and an anti-static attachment for cleaning floor tiles ( which also shows dust particles on the floor using lasers), two brush attachments, one with soft nylon brushes and the other with hard nylon brushes to clean areas that might need of some motivation.

An extra narrow accessory to reach tight spaces where your arm can’t. You also get an included wall mount to secure the vacuum when not in use and display it as the work of art it truly is.

Crazy suction power

I’ve used a few vacuums in my 28s, the most recent being a corded vacuum from LG, which is also incredibly powerful, although a little inconvenient to carry around with its bulk. However, Dyson’s V15 Detect is generations apart from that, in terms of convenience and power.

It sports a 240 Air Watt motor which is also cool and quiet. Using it to clean my felt headboard, the amount of tiny dust it was able to collect through the otherwise clean headboard was surprising. And that suction power was also evident when cleaning the dusty fans filled with dust mites.

The included “wand” attachment made it easy for me to reach the fan, and while it did get a little heavy, it wasn’t completely uncomfortable. Since the wand was firm like a PVC hose and not flexible like you see in other vacuum cleaner hoses, it made for a much more convenient experience.

Laser cleaning

The Slim Fluffy Head Laser Cleaner had a neat trick up its sleeve – a laser light would show dust particles that the human eye would otherwise miss, making sure no dust remains. And this feature worked much better than I expected. It really makes you think how little our eyes really see.

Though there were times when the vacuum’s tall, cylindrical shape made it difficult for me to get into tighter spaces, even with the low-profile attachment attached to the extended wand.

power play

Although there were four power modes – Auto, Eco, Med and Full – and each offered their energy endurance, using it in Auto mode was the most energy efficient. The internal sensor is smart enough to increase or decrease the level of power required depending on the surface and the type of particles.

Using automatic mode, I was able to easily get over 45 minutes of use on a single charge, although your bandwidth may vary.

If you know you’ll need all the power, going to Full would make sense, even if it would only give you around 15 minutes of use before needing a charge.

Also, I would have liked to see a plug-in option when I really wanted to start cleaning, as the battery would take about three hours to fully charge, which was a lot.

The dust sensor

The Dyson V15 Detect also consists of a tiny piezo sensor that actually looks at the size of incoming dust and offers a bar graph of what kind of dust is prevalent in your household.

It classifies them into four categories: greater than ten micrometers (allergens/pollen), greater than 60 micrometers (microscopic dust and scales), greater than 180 micrometers (mites and fine sand) and finally greater than 500 micrometers (particles as large as sugar or chips).

While many might find this feature useless, for someone who is always trying to stay away from pollen or other types of dust/allergen – people with asthma, sinusitis or other forms of dust allergies – as this provides a good insight into what is actually entering the household and whether steps can be taken to reduce or cease its existence in the room.

Anti-tangle suction comb

Hair accessories and the vacuum don’t have a good relationship – most end up getting caught in the nylon bristles of the brush and eventually you have to end up pulling it out by hand, and that’s not a fun experience.

However, Dyson V15 Detect introduced a tangle-free suction comb that effortlessly sucks up any hair on the floor – human or pet hair – and it did so while keeping the whole attachment just as clean as new. In my experience, I haven’t even had a single day where I had to manually pull the hair out of the attachment, which is truly groundbreaking.

Distribute trash like a boss

Distributing waste using the Dyson V15 Detect is even cooler than collecting. A small lever extends and opens the front part, which allows all the dust to fall completely. It definitely felt like reloading a shotgun to me.

And although the dust release action wasn’t as effective – dust did end up flying to the top in my case and the bin required manual cleaning with a microfiber cloth , it was worth it.

Should you buy the Dyson V15 Detect?

Dyson V15 Detect is a solid companion that can make house cleaning less of a chore. It features some of the latest and greatest in technology, along with a phenomenal 240 Air-Watt motor and an industrial design that only enhances its efficiency.

It surely has some flaws, related to the long charging speeds or a somewhat bulky design that can block access to tight spaces. But when you look at its overall performance, these issues don’t matter as much.

Priced at Rs 62,900, this is definitely a premium product. However, if you’re in the market for the best vacuum cleaner around, and money is no obstacle, the Dyson V15 Detect pretty much knocks it out of the park.

All that, along with two years of comprehensive accidental damage protection (which also applies to its other wireless offerings), it doesn’t really get better than this.
