Consumer fear over the spread of the coronavirus has boosted sales for companies including same-day grocery delivery services such as Instacart and Las Vegas-based home cleaning service Superb Maids.
Instacart said it saw its growth rate increase 10x in the past three days, while business in California, Washington, Oregon and New York increased 20x. The company operates the same-day grocery delivery service for stores like Costco, Sprouts, CVS, and Sam’s Club.
“Over the past few days, we have seen an increase in customer demand for pantry items such as powdered milk and canned goods, as well as personal care products such as hand sanitizer and vitamins. “, the company said in a statement. “We remain fully operational in North America and our goal is to continue to serve our community safely while ensuring our customers have uninterrupted access to delivery and pickup service for their groceries and household essentials. .”
It said the top five most searched items in the markets it serves were hand sanitizer, vitamins, powdered milk, face masks and canned goods.
The company offers delivery from 25,000 stores in 5,500 cities and more than 350 retailers. It works with over 10 retailers in Las Vegas and nearly 20 retail partners across the state such as Petco, Albertsons, Smith’s, Vons, El Super and Smart & Final.
Meanwhile, Elena Ledoux, managing director of Superb Maids, said she had fielded more inquiries from potential customers interested in sanitizing their homes.
“I think for most people they see (house cleaning) as a cosmetic thing, but now more than ever people are focusing on their health and the cleanliness of their environment, so it’s been a a weird helpful way, which I didn’t expect,” said Ledoux.
She said current clients have yet to add appointments, but said some clients have postponed services because they have become ill.
“There are a lot of bugs going around this season,” she said. “I just feel like there’s a lot more flu (cases) among people around me and everyone has a cold to one degree or another.”
