Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Leeds United in the Carabao Cup last night was nothing short of routine as they advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition. However, there was a point where fans spoke in which a photo of Rob Holding dribbling made comparisons to Lionel Messi.

Mikel Arteta’s side had less possession and shots on target against the energetic Leeds United side of Marcelo Bielsa, but still gained the upper hand.

Displaying a rather second-string starting XI, Arsenal have emerged as a weaker side against an almost complete Leeds side in a competition they haven’t won since 1993.

But goals from Calum Chambers and forward Eddie Nketiah helped the Gunners advance to the final eight with one goal apiece in the second half.

Still, there was one image that Arsenal fans talked about more than the goals.

After Holding embarked on a marauding race through the heart of the Leeds defense, an eagle-eyed fan on Reddit noticed it was identical to a photo of Messi slaloming through a Villarreal defense for Barcelona.

@reciprocalspace wrote in response: “It’s the same picture.”

The camera angles of the two are nearly identical with four defenders overwhelming the Stalybridge-born defender.

And fans were quick to compare the duo, despite the fact that Holding is common sense and Messi is considered the greatest dribbler of all time.

@JustBrowsingOverHere agrees, “In my mind I thought of the ‘I’m going on an adventure’ hobbit meme. Then two minutes later White thought ‘me too’.”

Fans might have wondered why Holding attempted the labyrinthine race, but a few agreed that the arrival of Ben White had an influence on Holding.

Another fan brought up the nickname given to Holding which seems to have given him a rather Brazilian ending to his quintessentially English last name.

“Put some respect on Holdinho’s name please,” @Wengali said.
